Biophillic Design

People spend approximately 90% of their lives indoors. For most of human evolution, we lived
embedded in nature — surrounded by plants, animals, water, changing light and the rhythms of seasons.
Biophilic design is the practice of bringing those connections back into the built environment, not as
decoration, but as a fundamental design principle grounded in evidence about human health and
wellbeing.
The word biophilia was popularised by the biologist E.O. Wilson in 1984, describing humanity’s innate
need to connect with other living systems. Biophilic design translates this into architecture and interior
design: spaces that satisfy our deep, biological need for connection with nature.
