Ergonomics & Anthropometrics for interior design

Every dimension in this guide is grounded in the measurements of the human body and how it moves
through space. Anthropometrics is the study of human body measurements. Ergonomics is the study of
designing for human use, comfort and safety. Together they are the invisible framework behind every
decision you make on a floor plan.
All measurements are given in millimetres unless otherwise stated. Minimum dimensions are the
absolute floor — go below them and the space fails. Preferred dimensions are what a professionally
designed space should achieve. All measurements are based on an able-bodied adult population;
inclusive design requirements for wheelchair users are noted separately.
